Secure Videoconferencing System for Hessian Schools

In the Corona pandemic, schools had to implement home schooling, i.e. virtual teaching, within a very short time. For this distance learning, teachers have to be able to convey the educational content to their students in a uniform and guaranteed manner using digital devices and appropriate software. The legal requirements, especially for data protection and secure use, are very high.

At the same time, the infrastructure needed to guarantee the provision of virtual lessons was not yet available to the extent required. The ANTARES PROJECT GmbH is established among others at Hessian schools, universities and public media centers as a supplier of a distribution system for digital educational content. ANTARES enlisted the support of Telekom MMS to set up a video conferencing system at schools in Hesse that would meet legal requirements and the needs of schools.

A DSGVO-Compliant and Scalable Cloud Solution for School Requirements

In the urgent pandemic phase with strict contact restrictions, it was important to give students access to digital instruction via home schooling as quickly and securely as possible. Strict data protection and data security requirements as well as protected use for students and teachers were specified.

At the same time, the solution had to be quick to implement so that virtual classes could take place quickly and cause little class downtime. A high level of user-friendliness for simple and intuitive operation was to help get the solution up and running quickly. Existing learning platforms such as Moodle and EDU Pool had to be easily integrated. A cost framework was also specified.

Solution

BigBlueButton on the Open Telekom Cloud

BigBlueButton was the desired video conferencing system for the schools in Hessen. In order to be able to set up the BigBlueButton architecture in a scalable manner for the varying number of users and to ensure stable and reliable operation, Telekom MMS relies on the Open Telekom Cloud, among other things. This fulfills EU-DSGVO conformity through important test certificates (e.g., BSI C5), certificates (e.g., ISO27001), as well as through a German parent company (T-Systems International GmbH) with the group's own employees. MMS ensures reliability and data protection on the cloud by working according to ITIL/ISO20000 & ISO27001.

In addition, the scalability and availability of the solution is ensured with the Cloud Automation Center. The integration of other, even existing learning platforms such as Moodle, via API connection, was also used. More than 475 schools use this solution for around 300,000 learners and almost 12,000 teachers for digital lessons in audio and video format, with up to 162 servers in operation for this purpose.

The ease of use and usability support the quickly demanded deployment. Together with Telekom MMS, Antares Project can further advance the distribution of digital educational content.
